For Odin!
K: Mason loves anything Avengers lately. I was cracking up in the car today. You know his Thor toy? It talks and says a bunch of stuff, and Mason repeats everything. So in the car, Mason yells “Fight with the rage of battle!!” And when I laughed, he goes, “It’s not funny, Mom. It’s SCARY!”

“The reference to God is easily misread, as Einstein’s question wasn’t theological. Instead, Einstein wanted to know whether the laws of physics necessarily yield a unique universe—ours—filled with galaxies, stars, and planets. Or instead, like each year’s assortment of new cars on the dealer’s lot, could the laws allow for universes with a wide range of different features? And if so, is the...
Me: I have four weddings this summer. Just bought two sets of flatware.
Julee: I know. And, if we don't ever marry, these people aren't going to buy us shit.
Me: I thought about that today as I looked through a registry.
Julee: If we're 40 and both single and childless, let's have a "Enjoying Single Life... Time To Give A Little Back" party. We can register for shit like pool tables and booze.

Eating up Houston →
“It might long for the respect it probably now deserves as the fourth-largest city in the country, but to me Houston has always been nothing more than New Orleans if New Orleans took a bath, put on a suit — a rather ill-fitting one — and got a job. A job that leaves it with more money to throw down on the bar at five o’clock in the afternoon, otherwise known as the time when the serious...
City of Houston Launches Bike Share Pilot Program →
“Beginning Wednesday, May 2, 2012, Houston will be one of only 15 U.S. cities to launch a bike share program to make getting around downtown a whole lot easier. The bike share program, known as Houston B-cycle, is perfect for trips that are too far to walk but too short to drive.”
“Houston’s initial phase will include three stations and 18 bikes and will demonstrate the...

Julee: Think I have to write a fucking speech for the reception.
Me: You write great speeches.
Julee: Still. Always a bridesmaid.
Me: But, articulate.
Julee: Yes, I'll die eloquent and alone.

“Four finalists have emerged from the Menil Collection’s extensive international search to select an architect to design its Menil Drawing Institute (MDI), the first major project to be built as a part of the museum’s long-range master plan.”

“The proposal also fails to note that between the Alternative Minimum Tax and Medicaid reimbursements, other credits, and numerous exemptions, most people pay about 15 percent in taxes, according to the IRS. Indeed, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center (even The New York Times uses it), the richest 1 percent pay 28 percent, while 85 percent of taxpayers pay 12 percent in federal...
The Strange (and Formerly Sexist) Economics of... →
“Let’s think like an economist. An engaged couple aren’t all that different from a borrower and a lender. The woman is lending her hand in marriage to the man, who promises to tie the knot at a later date. In the days of Breach of Promise, the woman would do this on an unsecured basis — that is, the man didn’t have to pledge any collateral — because the law...

It's full speed ahead for new convention center... →
“Plans to build a second convention hotel in downtown Houston are moving ahead as organizers have begun an official search to locate a hotel developer.”
“The hotel, to be built just north of Discovery Green park near the George R. Brown Convention Center, is expected to have 1,000 rooms, making it one of the largest hotels in Texas.”
“The new hotel would join...
Larry and Earvin still magic →
Magic: I was depressed all that one summer (of 1984, after his Lakers lost in the Finals to Bird’s Celtics in seven games). I was miserable. I sat in the dark a lot. I mean, a lot. I only went outside the house to go to the gym. I felt it was my fault for making some bad mistakes that cost us that series.
Reilly: Where? Where did you sit in the dark?
Magic: Just in my living room, going...
How More Expensive Housing Can Actually Cost You... →
“Housing policymakers have long lamented the trend of home-buyers who “drive to qualify.” If they can’t find anything affordable in the city, house hunters wander farther and father out in search of a mortgage or a rent payment that matches their pocketbook. But of course, there’s a serious flaw in this thinking: The farther you go in search of cheaper housing, the...
